Marine Hardware — frequently asked
- Is 316 or 304 stainless better for marine use?
- 316 stainless is better for marine environments. It contains molybdenum that significantly improves resistance to salt and chloride corrosion. 304 stainless is fine for occasional-splash or freshwater use but will show rust staining in constant saltwater exposure.
- What does “working load limit” mean on marine hardware?
- Working load limit (WLL) is the maximum load a fitting is rated to carry safely in normal use — well below its breaking strength, with a safety factor built in. Always choose hardware whose WLL comfortably exceeds the real-world loads it will see.
- Why do stainless bolts sometimes corrode or seize?
- Usually because of galvanic action between dissimilar metals (like stainless in aluminum) or crevice corrosion in low-oxygen spots. Use compatible metals, an isolating washer or anti-seize compound, and rinse with fresh water after salt exposure.
