How to choose marine hardware
Marine hardware lives or dies on material grade. 316 stainless steel is the go-to for exposed fittings because it resists salt corrosion far better than 304 stainless or zinc-plated steel. For high-load rigging you’ll also see forged (not cast) stainless and marine-grade bronze. Casting can hide voids that fail under load, so for anything safety-critical, forged parts are worth the premium.
Match the hardware to the load. Cleats, shackles, blocks, and padeyes carry working loads that must exceed the forces they’ll see — a line under strain, an anchor snubbing in a chop, a sail sheet loaded up. Check the working load limit (WLL), not just the look, and back every load-bearing fitting with a plate so the deck spreads the force.
Watch for galvanic pairing. Mixing dissimilar metals — stainless fasteners in aluminum, bronze near steel — invites corrosion. Use compatible metals, isolating washers, or anti-seize, and rinse hardware with fresh water after salt exposure to extend its life dramatically.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 316 or 304 stainless better for marine use?
- 316 stainless is better for marine environments. It contains molybdenum that significantly improves resistance to salt and chloride corrosion. 304 stainless is fine for occasional-splash or freshwater use but will show rust staining in constant saltwater exposure.
- What does “working load limit” mean on marine hardware?
- Working load limit (WLL) is the maximum load a fitting is rated to carry safely in normal use — well below its breaking strength, with a safety factor built in. Always choose hardware whose WLL comfortably exceeds the real-world loads it will see.
- Why do stainless bolts sometimes corrode or seize?
- Usually because of galvanic action between dissimilar metals (like stainless in aluminum) or crevice corrosion in low-oxygen spots. Use compatible metals, an isolating washer or anti-seize compound, and rinse with fresh water after salt exposure.
