How to choose marine plumbing & ventilation parts
Marine plumbing splits into a few systems: bilge (getting water out), fresh water (potable supply and pressure), raw water (cooling and washdown), and waste. Match every component to its job. A bilge pump is rated in gallons per hour (GPH), but real-world output drops with hose length and lift height, so size up β a pump rated well above your bilgeβs worst case gives you margin when it matters.
Hose is not interchangeable. Sanitation hose, potable-water hose, and bilge/raw-water hose are built for different pressures, temperatures, and permeation resistance. Using the wrong hose leads to odors, failures, or contamination. Below the waterline, use proper marine seacocks and double clamps on every thru-hull connection β this is a boat-sinks-at-the-dock detail, not a place to improvise.
Ventilation is the quiet half of this category. Cowl vents, solar and inline blowers, and dorade boxes prevent moisture buildup, clear engine-compartment fumes before starting, and keep the cabin fresh. A gasoline engine box in particular should be ventilated and blown out before every start.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I size a bilge pump?
- Bilge pumps are rated in gallons per hour (GPH), but actual output is lower once you account for hose length and vertical lift. Choose a pump rated well above your expected worst-case water intrusion, and consider a second, higher-capacity pump plus a float switch for automatic operation.
- Can I use regular garden hose for my boatβs water system?
- No. Marine plumbing uses purpose-built hose rated for the specific system β potable water, sanitation, and raw-water/bilge hoses differ in pressure rating, temperature resistance, and permeation. Using the wrong hose causes odors, leaks, or contamination.
- Why is ventilation important on a boat?
- Ventilation clears moisture that causes mildew and rot, and β critically on gasoline boats β clears fuel vapors from the engine compartment before starting. Blowers, cowl vents, and dorade boxes keep air moving through cabin and engine spaces for safety and comfort.
