Boat Outfitting — frequently asked
- What material should marine hardware be made of?
- For most exposed hardware, 316 stainless steel is the marine standard — it resists salt corrosion far better than 304 stainless or plated steel. Marine-grade aluminum, UV-stabilized nylon, and King StarBoard are also common for non-structural fittings.
- How do I know a replacement seat or hatch will fit?
- Measure the mounting pattern (bolt spacing), the cutout or base dimensions, and any post diameter or height on the part you’re replacing. Match those to the new part’s specs — outfitting parts follow common sizes but are not universal, so confirming dimensions avoids returns.
- Do I need backing plates for deck hardware?
- For anything that takes load — grab rails, cleats, ladder steps, seat pedestals — yes. A backing plate spreads the load across a larger area of the deck or transom so fasteners don’t pull through under stress.
