Description

Alternator Protection Module APM24 - 24V Alternators can be subjected to voltage spikes caused by lithium battery shutdowns, intermittent connections, and other over-voltage events. Balmar has introduced a robust Alternator Protection Module which helps to protect the alternator’s diodes and internal voltage regulator against spikes (clamping up to 60V) and sustained over-voltage conditions (beginning around 20V for the 12V version).

The APM can absorb multiple surges of such energy and can absorb surges in excess of 200 amps without failure to continually protect your alternator. Visual and audible alarms indicate if the device has been compromised and needs replacement.

Balmar APM devices provide intelligent, robust, solid-state protection in a small easily mounted package at the rear of the alternator between the B+ and B- terminals. Balmar APM devices can be used to protect all alternator brands.

Balmar APM devices meet ISO 16750-2 for Load Dump Protection and ISO 7637-2 for Surge Protection. This product may not be returned to the original point of purchase.

Electrical — frequently asked

What’s the difference between marine wire and regular wire?
Marine wire uses tinned (tin-coated) copper strands that resist the corrosion salt air causes, and it’s more finely stranded so it flexes with vibration without breaking. Standard automotive or household wire corrodes and fails much faster in a marine environment.
How do I size a fuse for a marine circuit?
Size the fuse to protect the wire, not just the device. Match the fuse rating to the wire gauge’s safe current capacity so the fuse blows before the wire overheats. When adding a new circuit, follow the wire manufacturer’s ampacity chart for the gauge and run length you’re using.
Do I need a battery switch on my boat?
A marine battery switch is strongly recommended. It lets you disconnect the battery for storage or service, isolate a failed battery, and — on multi-battery setups — choose which bank powers the boat. It’s a core safety and reliability component.
