Standard Lightning Detector for Pools & Spas with Mounting Base Enjoy your leisure time at the pool while knowing the TALOS pool lightning detector will keep you aware of approaching lightning or storms. Lightning commonly strikes water, and since water conducts electricity, a nearby lightning strike could kill or seriously injure a swimmer.
Don’t be caught off guard while having fun in the pool, spa, or hot tub! Mounting the Device: Mount the lightning detector a minimum of 3 feet away from cell phones, wearables, or other devices emitting electrical noise.
The detector will go through a sequence of all colors when it detects electrical noise interference. If this happens, relocate the detector.
How it Works: When lightning is first detected (up to 25 miles), the detector will flash all 8 LEDs for 5 minutes. To save battery life, after 5 minutes of lightning detection, the detector switches to blinking every other LED for the remaining time that lightning is detected (red, blue, or green depending on the distance of the lightning).

This alert is given every 10 seconds. If you are not using the lightning detector, make sure you remove the batteries prior to storing the detector.

- Requirements vary by boat length and operating area but generally include a Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person, fire extinguisher(s) of the correct class, visual distress signals, and a sound-producing device. Confirm the exact list for your boat’s size and where you operate.
- How many life jackets do I need?
- You need at least one properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jacket (PFD) for every person aboard, and boats 16 feet and over generally also need a throwable flotation device. Fit matters — a PFD that fits and is worn is what actually saves lives.
- Do marine flares and fire extinguishers expire?
- Yes. Pyrotechnic flares have an expiration date (typically about 42 months) and must be replaced, and fire extinguishers must be within date, charged, and undamaged. Check both on a schedule and replace anything expired — required safety gear only counts if it’s current.
