Anchoring & Docking — frequently asked
- What size anchor do I need for my boat?
- Anchor sizing is based on boat length, weight, and windage, and every anchor maker publishes a sizing chart. When in doubt, size up — a slightly oversized anchor holds better in poor bottoms and heavy weather, and the extra weight is minor next to the risk of dragging.
- How much anchor rode (scope) should I let out?
- A common rule is 7:1 — seven feet of rode for every foot of water depth (measured from the bow roller) in settled conditions, and more when it’s rough. Adequate scope sets the anchor at a low angle so it digs in rather than pulling out.
- How do I choose the right dock fenders?
- Match fender size to your boat’s length and weight (makers provide charts), and use enough of them to spread contact along the hull. Cylindrical fenders suit most hulls; round ball fenders suit high-freeboard boats and corners. Add chafe gear where lines run over edges.
